Government schemes to improve Education in India

Lets discuss Initiatives taken by Indian government to promote and improve the quality of education.

Initiatives in India to enhance educational standards

1) How to improve and change education system of India ?
  • Learning outcomes are be emphasized,
  • Efforts is to promote creativity and keep alive curiosity and inquisitiveness amongst students.
  • In higher education the focus should is on skilling, research and innovation.
  • Steps taken to achieve equity through: increased scholarships, education loans, remission and fee waivers for disadvantaged and marginalised sections.


2) Schemes  launched by Ministry of Human Resource and Development

i) National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF): Provides a relative ranking of Indian institutions, 

ii) India’s indigenous MOOCs platform, SWAYAM, which has already hosted over 480 courses online and, this year, plan to host 2000 courses and 

iii) GIAN (Global Initiative for Academics Network) under which 600 professors from 62 countries have already conducted their courses in India and, this year, we expect to receive another 800 faculty from across the world. 


iv) India’s research initiative, IMPRINT, which identifies priority areas for research for India, 

v) National Digital Library, which provides over 7.2 million online resources free of cost and is ever expanding National Academic Depository (NAD), 

vi) Smart India Hackathon, which involved over 40000 students in solving over 300 problems received from various sources.

viii) Uchchatar Avishkar Yojna (UAY)

ix) Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) project is intended to provide massive open online courses (MOOCs) to the students across the country and thereby expanding the reach of best quality education to students using the ICT tools.

x) Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) has also been established to give a major push for creation of high quality infrastructure in premier educational institutions. 

xi) National Academic Depository would help in easy authentication of the credentials issued by the institutions. This would also help in increasing transparency and ease of operation.

xii) SWAYAM Prabha DTH channels : The 32 DTH channels will help students in the rural areas and in the remote areas where IT infrastructure have not penetrated so well.  These channels operationalised for telecasting high quality educational content free of charge using the GSAT-15 satellite transponders


xiii) Adoption of Programme 17 for 17” : - A 17 point action plan for 2017 – for building digital campuses and high quality education. The action plan covers measures like universal adoption of digital education, digital financial transactions in the campuses from the current academic year.

xiv) Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA)
It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme. Under it, financial support is provided to improve infrastructure availability in the State Higher Educational Institutions and also to promote research and innovation.

xv) General Development Assistance
Scheme launched by UGC to provide financial assistance to eligible Central Universities, Deemed Universities, State Universities and colleges. The main objective of the grant, inter-alia, is to set up new infrastructure and strengthen/upgrade existing infrastructural facilities in the institutions.

xvi) In order to encourage innovation and infrastructure development, the UGC has launched various schemes and initiatives such as: 

- Universities with Potential for Excellence (UPE), 
- Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area (CPEPA), 
- Special Assistance Programme (SAP), 
- Research Projects, 
- Basic Science Research,
- Inter-University Centres
