Here we will discuss about SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) to promote online learning among the students and make interactive study material available to them online, free of cost which could be accessed by anyone at any time.

SWAYAM - Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds

What is SWAYAM?

It is a project of Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), which is intended to provide massive open online courses (MOOCs) to the students across the country and thereby expanding the reach of best quality education to students using the ICT tools.

Objectives of SWAYAM and how to achive it:

It is designed to achieve the 3 cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality.

The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

This is done through an indigenous developed IT platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in classrooms from 9th class till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time.

All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to the residents in India. More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the Country have participated in preparing these courses.

General Points about SWAYAM :

1) India has become one of the few countries in the World which has its own online interactive learning platform that provides, not only video lectures, reading material but also assignments/quizzes that could end up in securing credits after completing the assessment system.

2) More than 400 Courses are available on SWAYAM covering all the engineering and non-engineering subjects at undergraduate and post-graduate levels
The UGC has already issued Regulation that allows transfer of credits earned through the courses done through SWAYAM into the academic record of the students. It is now possible for the students and others to take courses of the prestigious IITs or IIMs without formally studying there.

3) The platform developed by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) with the help of Microsoft

4) The courses hosted on SWAYAM will be in 4 quadrants –

(i) video lecture,
(ii) specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed
(iii) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and
(iv) an online discussion forum for clearing the doubts.

5) Steps have been taken to enrich the learning experience by using audio-video and multi-media and state of the art pedagogy / technology.

6) 7 National Coordinators have been appointed in order to ensure best quality content are produced and delivered:

i) NPTEL for engineering,
ii) UGC for post-graduation education,
iii) CEC for under-graduate education,
iv) NCERT for school education,
v) NIOS for school education,
vi) IGNOU for out of the school students and
vii) IIMB for management studies.

7) Courses delivered through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however students wanting certifications shall be registered, shall be offered a certificate on successful completion of the course, with a little fee.

At the end of each course, there will be an assessment of the student through proctored examination and the marks/grades secured in this exam could be transferred to the academic record of the students. UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit Framework for online learning courses through SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 advising the Universities to identify courses where credits can be transferred on to the academic record of the students for courses done on SWAYAM.
