Ofek 16 - Israel's satellite for intelligence coverage

Israel has launched Ofek 16 reconnaissance satellite in low earth orbit using Shavit-2 rocket on 6th July, 2020 from Palmachim airbase in Central Israel to complete it's intelligence coverage.

Ofek 16 is an electro-optical imaging satellite with advanced technologies.

Ofek 16 satellite will capture high resolution images of the Earth and deliver it to Israel Defense Forces 9900 Intelligence Unit.

Ofek 16 satellite was made with technology from Israel's three largest defense companies:

 Elbit System  supplied multi-spectral, high resolution Jupiter Space camera which weighs 120 kgs, 1.5 m long and has 700 mm aperture.

 Rafael Advanced Defense Systems  worked on propulsion, fueling and other elements


Israel is among the 13 countries of the world that are capable of launching satellites.


* Note:
  • Ofek 1 satellite was launched in September 1988, which made Israel 8th country in the world to have its own orbit launch capability.
  • The last satellite in Ofek series - Ofek 11 was launched in September 2016.

Shavit-2 Rocket
  • Shavit-2 is a three-stage, solid fuelled rocket build by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
  • Shavit family of rockets is derived from Jericho II missile.
  • Shavit can carry a payload of upto 380 kgs.
