The below REASONING question was asked in SSC CGL 2019 (Tier-1) exam held on 4th June, 2019, Shift-1, SET-1.


Q. Three of the following four letter-clusters are alike in a certain way and one is different. Pick the odd one out.

(a) CFIL 
(b) GHIJ
(c) MOQS 
(d) PSUX


Solution:

Correct Answer: (d) PSUX

1) Write down alphabets from A to Z.

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z


2) Let's analyse each option and find out a pattern which is followed.

Option (a) CFIL 

C +2 letters = F

F +2 letters = I

I +2 letters = L

Pattern observed is there is gap of 2 letters between when we move from first letter to the next one.


Option (b) GHIJ

G +0 letters = H

H +0 letters = I

I +0 letters = J

Pattern observer is its a trail of consecutive letters.


Option (c) MOQS 

M +1 letter = O

O +1 letter = Q

Q +1 letter = S

Pattern observed is there is gap of 1 letter between two letters.


Option (d) PSUX

P +2 letters = S

S +1 letter = U

U +2 letters = X

Here pattern is breaking as the gap between first two letters P & S is of 2 letters but gap between S & U is of only 1 letter and then again gap between U & X is of 2 letters.

Hence Option (d) PSUX is correct answer as it does not follow a constant pattern.
