BrahMos is a two-stage supersonic cruise missile having a full range of 290-km, capable of carrying a conventional warhead weighing up to 300 kg.
BrahMos is jointly designed, developed and produced by India and Russia and is named after two rivers - Brahmaputra of India and Moskva of Russia.
An intergovernmental agreement was signed between India and Russia in Feb 1998 which formed BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India's DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) .
The first version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was inducted into the Indian Navy in 2005, meant to be fired from INS Rajput.
1) Propellants:
BrahMos two-stage supersonic cruise missile consisting of :
- A solid propellant booster engine as its first stage which brings it to supersonic speed and then gets separated.
- A liquid ramjet as the second stage which takes missile closer to 3 Mach speed in cruise phase.
2) BrahMos's Principle of Operation:
- BrahMos missile operates on ‘fire and forget principle’.
3) Altitude:
- BrahMos can have cruising altitude of upto 15 km and terminal altitude of 10m.
4) Flight Range of BrahMos:
- BrahMos missile has a full flight range of 290 kms.
5) Speed of BrahMos:
- BrahMos is a supersonic missile i.e. the speed of missile is greater than speed of sound.
- BrahMos has a top speed of 2.8 Machs.
- A new version of BrahMos is under development which is aimed to attain a flying speed of 5 Machs (Hypersonic cruise missile).
6) Induction in Indian Armed Forces:
BrahMos has been operationalised in the Indian Armed Forces with all the three services - Indian Army, Indian Airforce and Indian Navy.
7) BrahMos launching capability
BrahMos is capable of been launched from land, air and sea.
- It has been integrated in SU-30MKI aircraft and can hit sea targets.
- It can be launched from naval ships and submarines.
- It can be launched from Land based Weapon Complex system
8) Indigenous components (Make-In-India):
BrahMos missile features indigenous components such as:
- Indian propulsion system,
- Power supply,
- Booster and Airframe Section
