Sahitya Akademi is the National Academy of Letters which felicitates outstanding work in the field of language and literature. Each year, Sahitya Akademi awards Sahitya Akademi Award to outstanding works in 24 languages recognized by it.

What is Sahitya Akademi?
Sahitya Akademi is India’s National Academy of Letters, which was inaugurated by Government of India in March 1954 as an autonomous organization.
Sahitya Akademi was registered as a society in 1956 under Societies Registration Act, 1860.
Sahitya Akademi is one of the three National Akademi's in India. The other two are:
1. Sangeet Natak Akademi
2. Lalit Kala Academi

What is Sahitya Akademi Award?
Sahitya Akademi Award is awarded ANNUALLY by the Sahitya Akademi to felicitate outstanding works in the fields of literature and languages recognized by Sahitya Akademi.
Sahitya Akademi Award is the 2nd highest LITERARY Award in India after Jananpith Award given by Government of India.
The first Sahitya Akademi award was given in 1954.
Sahitya Akademi award is given in 24 languages, including 22 languages listed in 8th Schedule of the Constitution and English & Rajasthani.
Criteria for Sahitya Akademi Award
The criteria to be fulfilled for getting Sahitya Akademi Award are:
1) Sahitya Akademi Award is given to Indian author.
2) Book/work should be published in India.
3) Language of book/work should be recognized by Sahitya Akademi.
4) The work should be Outstanding contribution to the language and literature to which it belongs to.
5) The book must be published 5 years immediately preceding the year of Award (i.e. between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017)
6) If two or more books are found to be of equal merit,
- total literary contribution and
- standing of their authors
is taken into consideration while deciding award.
7) If no book is published during 5 years preceding the year of award, AWARD FOR THAT LANGUAGE IS NOT AWARDED
How is WINNER selected for the Sahitya Akademi Award?
1) JURY
The winner is selected by a JURY of 3 members for each language i.e:
- Awards recommended by members representing 24 languages.
- Each language has 3 jury members
2) Approval
The winner is approved by the Executive Board of Sahitya Akademi

The winners of Sahitya Academy Award gets:
a) Engraved Copper plaque, which is designed by Satyajit Ray (an Indian film maker)
b) Rs.1 Lakh cash prize
