Sahitya Akademi Award 2019 winners have been declared by Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters of India.
- Shashi Tharoor has won the award for his non-fiction work “An era of Darkness: The British Empire in India” in English language category.
- Nand Kumar Acharya has won the award for his poetry work “Chheelate Hue Apne Ko” in Hindi language category.
Sahitya Akademi Award is an annual award given by Sahitya Akademi which is India’s National Academy of Letters. The Sahitya Akademi Award is given to outstanding work of languages and literatures of 24 languages which are recognized by the Sahitya Akademi.
Out of 24 languages recognized by Sahitya Akademi, 22 languages are present in 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution and other two languages are English and Rajasthani.
Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram and a writer, has won the Sahitya Akademi Award 2019 for his non-fiction work in English - “An era of Darkness: The British Empire in India”.

In Hindi language category, poet Nand Kishore Acharya has won the Sahitya Akademi Award 2019 for his poetry work - “Chheelate Hue Apne Ko”.
The awards given in 24 languages this year can be categorized into the following category:
a) Poetry work: 7 books
b) Short stories: 6 books
c) Novel: 4 books
d) Essays: 3 books
e) Non-Fiction: 1 book

- an engraved copper plate designed by Satyajit Ray, an Indian film maker;
