National Sports Awards are given each year on National Sports Day which is celebrated on 29th August to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the great hockey icon who lead India to win three consecutive Gold Medals in Olympics in year 1928, 1932 and 1936.
Each year Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs give sports awards to recognize and reward excellence in sports. The awards are given under four categories:
- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
- Arjuna Award
- Dronacharya Award
- Dhyan Chand Award
Apart from these four awards, Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award are also awarded. A Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) trophy is given to the top performing university in inter-university tournaments.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was instituted in 1991 and is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
- It is the highest sporting honour of India.
- The first recipient of Khel Ratna was Chess player - Vishwanathan Anand, who was awarded in 1991.
- The youngest recipient of Khel Ratna was Abhinav Bindra, a Olympic medal winner in shooting who was awarded award in 2001 when he was 18 years of age.
The award carries a medal, a scroll of honour and a cash prize of Rs. 7.50 lakhs.
Usually it is awarded to single person with few exceptional years like 2020 when five people were awarded Khel Ratna.
Arjuna Award
Arjuna Award was instituted in 1961 and is given for consistent outstanding performance for four years, provided sportsperson should have shown qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline.
The Awardee is given a bronze statue of Arjuna, a scroll of honour, ceremonial dress and a cash award of Rs. 5.00 lakhs.
Dronacharya Award
Dronacharya Award was instituted in 1985 and it goes to the coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events.
The awardee is given a bronze statue of Guru Dronacharya, a scroll of honour, ceremonial dress and a cash prize of Rs. 5.00 lakhs.
The first recipients of the awards in 1985 were:
- Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat (Wrestling)
- Om Prakash Bhardwaj (Boxing)
- O. M. Nambiar (Athletics)
Dhyan Chand Award
Dhyan Chand Award is for life time contribution to sports development.
The awardee is given a statuettes, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh.
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar is given to the corporate entities (both in private and public sector) and individuals who have played a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development.
The awardee entity is given a trophy and citation.
Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award
Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs recognises the spirit of adventure among the people of the country by bestowing the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award.
The awardees are given a statuette, certificate and cash award of Rs. 5 lakh.
The objectives of the Award are:
a) To recognize the achievements of persons in the fields of adventure.
b) To encourage young people to develop the spirit of endurance, risk–taking, cooperative teamwork and quick, ready and effective reflexes in challenging situations.
c) To provide incentive to the young people for getting exposed to the adventure activities.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy
The top performing university in inter-university tournaments is awarded MAKA trophy, certificate and award money of Rs. 15 lakh.
How are award winners chosen?
The winners are chosen by 12-members National Sports Award Selection Committee constituted by Government of India.
The 12 members committee consists of:
a) Chairperson - nominated by Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs
b) 4 Olympians or previous Khel Ratna or Arjuna Award winners
c) 3 sports journalists/experts/commentators
d) 1 sportsperson/expert/administrator associated with parasports
e) 1 sports administrator
f) Director General of SAI
g) Joint Secretary of Department of Sports
Based on the recommendations of the Committee and after due scrutiny, the Government decides to confer awards.
