Sahitya Akademi Award 2019

Sahitya Akademi Award 2019 winners have been declared by Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters of India.

  • Shashi Tharoor has won the award for his non-fiction work “An era of Darkness: The British Empire in India” in English language category.

  • Nand Kumar Acharya has won the award for his poetry work “Chheelate Hue Apne Ko” in Hindi language category.

Krishnadevaraya - a great patron of learning and literature

Krishnadevaraya ruled the Vijayanagar empire from 1509 to 1526 A.D. He was an able scholar himself and promoted Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Sanskrit literature during his rule. His reign was called as the Golden Period of Telugu Literature. Some of his famous works include books such as Amukta Malyada (in Telugu), Jambavati Kalyana (in Sanskrit) and Krishnadevaraya Dinachari (in Kannada). He was also called as Abhinava Bhoga. He had eight Telugu poets in his court called as Ashtadiggajas.

6 INDIAN CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

In this article, we will discuss about: what are the six classical languages of India? What is meant by Classical language status? What are the criteria for receiving Classical language title? What are the advantages of getting the Classical language status? 

Ministry of Tourism and Culture has granted classical language status to six Indian languages which are Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malyalam and Odiya. The six Indian Classical languages get financial grants from the Government for setting up Centre of Excellence to promote study of these languages and the two eminent scholars of these languages are granted an award each year.
